Spring Agro Industries Limited has intensified efforts to collaborate with local farmers through an out-grower programme aimed at increasing rice production and strengthening Ghana’s local rice value chain.
According to the company’s Chairman, Pankaj Mohindroo, the initiative seeks to bring more farmers into rice cultivation in order to help the company meet its growing production capacity and supply both local and potential export markets.
Spring Agro currently has storage capacity of about 15,000 tonnes of rice, but production levels remain lower than that capacity, prompting the company to partner with out-growers across farming communities.
The programme encourages farmers to cultivate rice on their own lands while benefiting from technical support and agricultural inputs such as seedlings and chemicals to improve yields.
Local authorities have welcomed the initiative. Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, commended Spring Agro for investing in the region and supporting efforts to expand rice production. He also encouraged the company to engage more farmers from surrounding districts to help meet the medium-term production target of 15,000 tonnes of rice.
The Central Tongu District Assembly also confirmed strong interest from farmers, noting that about 80 out-growers had already registered, with plans to increase participation to as many as 1,800 farmers to boost production capacity.
Through this out-grower model, Spring Agro aims to create a win-win agricultural ecosystem where farmers benefit from reliable markets and support services while the company secures a stable supply of paddy for processing.
The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to local rice production, job creation, and Ghana’s broader goal of reducing dependence on imported rice, while strengthening the agricultural economy in the Volta Region and beyond.
